1/8 x 1-1/2 x 16 in. African Mahogany Turning Blank is crafted from African Mahogany, a wood primarily found in West Africa, with some species also growing in Central and East Africa. This wood includes various Khaya species, with weights ranging from 33 to 50 pounds per cubic foot. The most prized variety, Khaya Ivorensis, is favored for its stability and excellent working properties. The heartwood starts with a distinct pink hue when freshly sawn and matures to colors ranging from light pinkish-brown to a rich reddish tone. The sapwood, which is yellowish-brown, is not clearly separated from the heartwood. This wood features an interlocking grain and a coarse texture, which requires a reduction of the cutting angle to 15 degrees to minimize surface pick-up during cutting.
